Topeka, KS (PRWEB) February 9, 2010 -- Senator Janis Lee Sponsors Senate Resolution supporting Kevin Saunders for Chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness & Sports.
The official presentation of the Senate Resolution to Kevin Saunders will be held February 10 at 2:35 PM on the Senate Floor at the State Capitol in Topeka, KS. The resolution supporting Kevin Saunders appointment to chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness & Sports was adopted by the Senate body and a copy was sent to the President.
Senator Lee believes that Kevin would serve as the best possible choice to lead the President's Fitness Council as chairman.
“I am extremely proud to introduce a Senate Resolution on behalf of Kevin Saunders. Despite being badly injured and handicapped in 1981, Kevin has dedicated his life to promoting physical activity and fitness among Kansans of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Through his advocacy, Kevin has positively touched the lives of countless disabled Americans and serves as a role model to us all.” -- Senator Janis Lee
Kevin Saunders isn't just a fitness icon; he is an example of the American spirit in action. Paralyzed from the chest down by one of the worst industrial accidents in our nation’s history -- a grain elevator explosion that launched him more than 100 yards and should have left him dead -- he has gone on to become a celebrated athlete, champion, and example for young people everywhere.
While a personal tragedy of that magnitude might have ended the dreams of most people, Kevin has turned his misfortune into a catalyst for self achievement, both in himself and others. Not content to simply accept a limited "life with a disability," he used physical fitness as the tool with which he could reshape his life. Beginning with small, local races, he turned from a young man cut down in his prime to an emerging athletic force, winning regional, national, and eventually international competitions.
It's possible that being a two-time Paralympian and medal winner who in 1990 was named "the world's greatest all-around wheelchair athlete" would be impressive enough. These achievements, however, only scratch the surface. Following his performances in Korea and Spain, Kevin was appointed to the President's Council by George H.W. Bush -- making him the first person with a disability / Paralympian to serve on the council, and the only member reappointed by President Bill Clinton.
At the conclusion of that term, Kevin continued to serve the American people by pushing himself from one end of the country to the other, over 2,500 painstaking miles in all, stopping in cities and towns along the way to hold forums on fitness. He has made it his mission, should he be selected for service on the President's Council again, this time as chairman he plans to visit all 50 states personally and do whatever he can to help Americans enjoy happier, healthier lives. His plan is to spend a minimum of two weeks in each state, not only meeting with political and community leaders, but motivating students to keep daily accountability journals with their short and long term goals for education, fitness and making healthier choices.
As someone with extensive experience on the President’s Council, not to mention extensive media exposure and a commitment to health and fitness throughout our nation, Kevin Saunders is the perfect choice for Chairman of President Obama's President's Council Physical Fitness & Sports. He understands exactly what it will take to build a healthier America, and he's committed to doing whatever it takes to create lasting change.
At the state capitol of Kansas there will be many in attendance in support of Kevin Saunders appointment as the next chairman of the President's Fitness Council, one of which will be Kevin's long-time friend and supporter legendary Head Football Coach Bill Snyder of the Kansas State University Wildcats, who orchestrated the greatest turn-around in college football history and possibly all of sports. As Head Coach Bill Snyder said in his letter to President Obama, "Kevin Saunders through is determination, pride and faith in his country, his leadership capacity, his ability to command great respect from his peers, his honesty and loyalty, and the intrinsic value system he has in place, in my eyes become the perfect fit to chair the President's Fitness Council. This country and its youth would profit amazing well from his selection."
Another great supporter of Kevin's is former 2-time Olympic Gold Medalist in the Pole Vault and first person to be featured on the Wheaties box, Bob Richards, who quotes "Mr. President, One of the most heroic and valiant endeavors in the world of sport that I have ever seen is the effort and struggle of Kevin Saunders. Crippled by a blast in a grain elevator and thrown hundreds of feet into a crumpled mass and unbelievably and miraculously fought to survive. Not only living, he resolved to take his crippled body and make a great contribution to life."

Kevin Saunders Winner of the Houston Half Marathon Wheelchair Division Nominated to Head President Obama’s Fitness Council

Fresh off a win at the Houston Chevron/Aramco Half Marathon 2010, Kevin Saunders hopes to ignite a grassroots movement, encouraging people to write letters to support his nomination as chair of the Presidential Physical Fitness Council. Saunders is a dynamic motivational coach, inspirational speaker, and accomplished wheelchair athlete. Show Kevin support by becoming a Facebook fan of the group dedicated to making him the chair.
Houston, TX (PRWEB) February 2, 2010 -- He recently won the Houston Chevron/Aramco half marathon, now Kevin Saunders wants to share his amazing personal story with the nation. Soon President Obama will name a chair to lead the President’s Council on Physical Fitness. Saunders has been nominated, but he needs grassroots help -- write a letter to support Kevin Saunders as chair of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness. Start today by becoming a Facebook fan of Kevin Saunders for Chairman of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness / Sport. His supporters have set a goal of 5,000 Facebook fans.
See Kevin’s ABC TV interview after the race where he talks about what he would do as Chairman.
As Governor Schwarzenegger said; Kevin’s broken body serves as a silent testament to one who has overcome tremendous obstacles and beckons others to follow Kevin Saunders’ audacious plan as chairman is to push his wheelchair through all 50 states over the next 2.5 years. He’ll speak in schools and visit the Mayors and city councils and Governors to see what the PCPFS can do, as well to encourage the entire community get fit.
“Kids need to see what choices take them closer to their goals or further away, and start refining and improving their choices. This tour also allows them to realize that most goals are not reached in days or even weeks but months and sometime years,” said Saunders. “I have a deep passion and drive to see that all of America gets fit! At each stop I want to have an activity such as a run, aerobics, and other physical activities accessible to most people. The tour is inspired by my friend and mentor, Arnold Schwarzenegger. When he chaired the committee, he visited all 50 state capitols. As Governor Schwarzenegger said; ‘Kevin’s broken body serves as a silent testament to one who has overcome tremendous obstacles and beckons others to follow’.”
Saunders was appointed to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness by President George H.W. Bush and was the only council member to be reappointed to the council by President Bill Clinton. He is a sought-after speaker, motivational coach, and author of five books. He has a proven, singular to communicate, not only about fitness as an essential, everyday tool, but way to truly overcome life’s most challenging circumstances. There could be no better role model to lead the President’s committee.
Organized athletic competition is only one element of his record of achievement. Saunders’ attempt to raise awareness of fitness and disability issues led him to wheel over 2,500 miles from Canada to México and serve as “Ambassador of Fitness” wheeling across several European countries, meeting with officials to advance disability causes.

Kevin Speaking to Maize Elementary Students 12-4-09

Kevin Saunders spoke to the Maize Elementary students about keeping accountability journals starting in 2010 to write down their long and short term goals for education, fitness and making healthy choices. Then they can make daily entries and see if those choices they are making are taking them closer to their goals or further away and they can eliminate the choices that take them away from their goals and refine their plans as they move forward towards reaching their goals. Kevin said by keep your daily accountably journal will not only help you reach your goals but also see that most goals aren't reached in days or weeks but most of the time months and even years. He used President Obama and his goal to become President as one example of a goal that took years but very worthwhile reaching. Kevin also said we may have a future President setting in the audience today, an Olympic Champion, great scientist, writer, artist because YOU BECOME WHAT YOU GO FOR!

“We had the pleasure of having Kevin Saunders speak at Maize Central Elementary school. His message focused on character traits such as accountability, compassion, respect, responsibility, and perseverance. These are just some of the traits that we reinforce everyday as part of our character education program. Kevin’s upbeat personality was very inspirational for our staff and students. I would recommend Kevin as a speaker for any school or organization that is wanting to energize and take on a never give up attitude.”
- Principal David Jennings Maize Central Elementary, Wichita, KS

Kevin Saunders, Nominee to Head President’s Fitness Council, Speaks in Wichita Friday
Motivational Speaker and Accomplished Wheelchair Athlete Kevin Saunders to Address INTRUST BANK Dinner 8pm December 3, 2009 at Hyatt Regency for KLA – Kansas Livestock Association Clients & on Friday at Maize Central Elementary School
Wichita, KS (PRWEB) December 4, 2009 -- Kevin Saunders, a motivational coach and inspirational speaker, will address the INTRUST BANK Kansas Livestock Association clients about overcoming adversity, breaking barriers and transcending limitations on Thursday December 3, 2009 at 8PM at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. This event will be the culmination of the KLA Annual Convention for the INTRUST BANKS KLA Clients.
Saunders will share his personal story of tragedy to triumph and help inspire the players to display their courage by sacrificing more, working harder and smarter than anyone else, overcoming life's adversities by making the right choices and never giving up regardless of obstacles. Saunders and INTRUST BANK both agree that there's no shortcut to success, but good old-fashioned hard work! Saunders says it is a great honor for him to speak to this group and that working together INTUST BANK with their KLA Clients helps the Livestock owners accomplish things that might otherwise not be possible and in turn livestock over the years has been a good sound investment for the Banking industry. Together Saunders says:"INTRUST BANK and their KLA Clients help strengthen our Economy, our communities, the state of Kansas and America. Both the values and appreciates each other and are interdependent."
When Bruce Frost heard that Kevin Saunders was going to be in the Wichita area in December, his immediate response was, "When can I get him down here to speak to our INTRUST BANK / KLA Client dinner?" Saunders was excited to speak to a group as he grew up on a cattle and grain farm in North West Kansas (Downs, KS) where his father taught him the value of hard work at an early age. Growing up on a cattle and grain farm near Downs, KS in Smith County, Saunders was a member of 4-H and FFA and routinely showing his Feeder Steers at the county fair and with his Dads guidance and advice won the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of the over 50 steers that were in competition from Smith County.
Saunders graduated from Kansas State University with a BS degree in Agriculture and is listed as one of the most famous graduates from KSU. See link KSU famous Alumni - http://www.k-state.edu/welcome/famous_alumni.html
Saunders' incredible journey of survival and triumph began when he was paralyzed by a grain elevator explosion as a young man. Though the doctor told him that there was no hope, against all odds Saunders survived. Paralyzed from the chest down, he struggled to find a new meaning and focus for his life. Abused and abandoned by his young wife, his life fell into disarray. Divorced, bankrupt, and utterly alone, Saunders fell into a deep depression.
VoiceAmerica radio show co-host Sheryl Dawson shared, "Rather than remain miserable, Kevin sharpened his body and mind to become a world class athletic competitor. Now he teaches his audiences around the world to move forward in spite of whatever challenge they may face."
Saunders has received more than 100 commendations, proclamations and awards for his work to improve health and fitness, education and sports in America and around the world. Saunders has competed in more than 700 races, winning hundreds of medals. He is the author of several books including "There's Always a Way," "Mission Possible," "Conversations in Health" “CENTAUR” The first Wheelchair Action Hero Comic book and the just recently released "Blueprint for Success." He's inspired more than 5,000 groups including more than 1,000 schools around the world. On Friday Saunders will be speaking to a local Wichita school area on Friday.
Saunders will be featured the featured guest Chris Allison SPORTS TALK Radio KGSO 1410 am at 8:05 AM this Friday morning December 4th 2009.
In a recent interview May 18, 2009, on VoiceAmerica – Total Career Success, co-host Ken Dawson added, "If you want to be inspired, listen to the wisdom of Kevin Saunders. Kevin has an incredible story of turning agony into ecstasy, as the saying goes! His nonstop energy and genuine enthusiasm are contagious. Learn the secrets of overcoming obstacles and using your life's battles to become a winner."
Kevin Saunders: Health, Fitness and Sports Advocate, Motivational Coach, Author and Inspirational Speaker
Saunders donated a track to his hometown that only had a dirt path around the football field and then Downs High School now (Lakeside High School, Downs, KS) won the state 1A track and field championship in 1989. Kevin said ‘I hope having a real track to train on will mean the difference between 2nd and 1st place in the state and help the athletes be all they believe they can be.
In 1989 Saunders worked alongside Tom Cruise and Oliver Stone as a principal actor to feature in the major studio release "Born on the Fourth of July," an Academy Award-winning movie directed by Stone.
From 1991 to 2005 Saunders worked with Snyder and the Kansas State University football team, where he served as the inspirational / motivational coach during what was to become known as the greatest turnaround in college football history. In 1993 at Kansas State, Snyder created the "Kevin Saunders Never Give Up Award," a team award given to the player who displayed the most courage, determination, dedication and perseverance in the pursuit of team goals.
Saunders was the first person with a disability appointed to the President's Council on Physical Fitness & Sports by President George H. W. Bush and was the only member retained and reappointed by President Bill Clinton. More recently, Saunders was nominated by Senator Pat Roberts in October for Chairman of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports in the Obama Administration.
If appointed by President Obama Saunders would become the first person with a disability to hold that position. Saunders says he would like to follow his friend Governor Schwarzenegger lead and visit all 50 states promoting education, fitness and making healthy choices to ISD’s across America. Focusing on having students keep personal accountability journals to set their goals and make plans to reach them and see how their daily choices affect their ability to reach their goals. They can also see that most goals are not reached in days or weeks but months.
When Saunders speaks to the Maize Elementary students in Wichita, KS on Friday at 2 pm, he will also be focusing on character value’s like self discipline, honesty, acceptance, perseverance, friendship, compassion and Never Giving Up on your dreams on goals.
Saunders pushed his wheelchair over 2,500 miles across America to promote health and fitness. Later, he wheeled himself through portions of five countries in Europe, serving as an international ambassador for health and fitness to encourage active lifestyles.
Saunders received his Bachelor of Science in agriculture from Kansas State University. After his accident, Saunders attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he earned an associate's degree in kinesiology and acting. In 2000 Del Mar selected Saunders to its Wall of Honor as an outstanding alumnus. During that same year, he was invited to Washington, D.C., and presented the Outstanding Alumni Award from the America Association of Community Colleges.
